কির্তনখোলা নদীর তীরে অবস্থিত বরিশালের পূর্ব নাম ছিল চন্দ্রদ্বীপ। প্রায় ২৭৯০ বর্গকিলোমিটার আয়তনের এ জেলার উত্তরে মাদারীপুর, শরীয়তপুর ও চাঁদপুর জেলা, দক্ষিণে পটুয়াখালী, বরগুনা ও ঝালকাঠি জেলা, পূর্বে ভোলা ও লক্ষীপুর জেলা এবং পশ্চিমে ঝালকাঠি, পিরোজপুর ও গোপালগঞ্জ জেলা। কীর্তনখোলা, আড়িয়াল খাঁ, কচা, তেঁতুলিয়া, সন্ধ্যা ইত্যাদি জেলার প্রধান নদী। বরিশাল সদর, বাবুগঞ্জ, বানারীপাড়া, গৌরনদী, আগৈল ঝড়া, হিজলা, মুলাদী, উজিরপুর, মেহেন্দীগঞ্জ ও বাকেরগঞ্জ বরি

Located on the banks of the river Kirtankhola, Barisal was formerly known as Chandradwip. Madaripur, Shariatpur and Chandpur districts to the north, Patuakhali, Barguna and Jhalokati districts to the south, Bhola and Laxmipur districts to the east and Jhalokati, Pirojpur and Gopalganj districts to the west. Kirtankhola, Arial Khan, Kacha, Tentulia, Sandhya etc. are the main rivers of the district. Barisal Sadar, Babuganj, Banaripara, Gournadi, Agail Jhara, Hijla, Muladi, Wazirpur, Mehendiganj and Bakerganj are the upazilas of Barisal.
