বাংলাদেশের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ জেলাগুলোর মধ্যে একটি হল নোয়াখালী জেলা। এ জেলার উত্তরে কুমিল্লা, দক্ষিণে মেঘনার মোহনা ও বঙ্গোপসাগর, পূর্বে ফেনী ও চট্রগ্রাম জেলা ও পশ্চিমে লক্ষীপুর এবং ভোলা জেলা। বামনী ও মেঘনা জেলার প্রধান নদী। নোয়াখালী জেলার প্রাচীন নাম ছিল সুধারামপুর। এরপরে এর নাম হয় ভুলুয়া। ডাকাতিয়া নদীর ঘন ঘন বন্যার হাত হতে অঞ্চলকে রক্ষার জন্য ১৬৬০ সালে ডাকাতিয়া নদী থেকে রামগঞ্জ, সোনাইমুড়ী এবং চৌমুহনীর মধ্য দিয়ে মেঘনা ও ফেনী নদীর মিলন স্থলে দীর্ঘ খাল খনন করা হয়। এই খাল খনন করার পর ১৬৬৮ সাল থেকে এ জেলার নাম নোয়া বা নতুন এবং খাল থেকে নাম হয় নোয়াখালী। এ জেলার আয়তন প্রায় ৩৬০১ বর্গকিলোমিটার।

Noakhali district is one of the important districts of Bangladesh. Comilla to the north, Meghna estuary and Bay of Bengal to the south, Feni and Chittagong districts to the east and Laxmipur and Bhola districts to the west. Bamni and Meghna are the main rivers of the district. The ancient name of Noakhali district was Sudharampur. After that its name is Bhulua. To protect the region from frequent floods by the Dakatia River, long canals were dug from the Dakatia River in 180 to the confluence of the Meghna and Feni rivers through Ramganj, Sonaimuri and Chaumuhani. After the excavation of this canal, the name of the district was changed to Noah or New and the name of the canal was changed to Noakhali. The area of this district is about 3601 sq km.
